Central Marin Sanitation Agency

The Agency has two anaerobic digesters that process primary sludge, thickened waste-activated sludge, and organic waste to produce biogas. The biogas is used to generate heat and renewable electricity via the cogeneration system.

CMSA normally produces up to 100% of the facility's power needs, and at times, exports electricity to the grid, making the Agency largely energy self-sufficient.The graph below shows the average energy consumption of the facility per month (blue line), how many kW hours were purchased (either natural gas or electricity), and how much biogas-generated electricty was exported and sold. Renewable power generated by CMSA is procured by MCE (Marin Clean Energy).
